Ammonium bifluoride in the glass industry

AMMONIUM bifluoride successfully replaces the traditional, but a dangerous and aggressive material - hydrofluoric acid. Ammonium bifluoride use instead of hydrofluoric acid greatly simplifies the processing of glass, making it safer and less harmful, and reduce your costs by 10 - 15%.
To determine the amount of ammonium bifluoride (BPA) to be added to the solution instead of hydrofluoric acid, which must be assumed that the effect of both of these substances are determined by the content of fluorine. Mass fraction of fluorine in the product can be calculated by the formula:
Masses. Fobsch share. = A / B x (Purity)
where - A - molecular weight of fluorine in the product;
       - B - total molecular weight of the product.
So, for ammonium bifluoride with basic substance 98% mass fraction of total fluorine in it will be: (38/57) x 98 = 65.33%.
Hydrofluoric acid concentration of 45% of this figure (Fobsch) is:
(19/20) x 45 = 42.75%
On this basis, it is easy to calculate the quantity of BPA on the content of fluoride will match the amount of hydrofluoric acid are equivalent. In case of replacement of hydrofluoric acid (45%) in the BFA (98%) is that we have to take Ammonium bifluoride 1.53 times less than that of hydrofluoric acid (65.33 / 42.75 = 1.53).

Matt drawing on glass can be obtained chemically. For this glass coated with a thin layer of wax. Prepared in advance figure is placed on the reverse side of the glass to the light, and the blunt end of the needle scratched necessary in paraffin sections. Then, using clay to make the glass cell and poured back etching solutions. Composition 1: potassium fluoride - 8 parts, Sulphuric acid - 1 part water - 100 parts. Sulfuric acid can be replaced by hydrochloric or acetic acid, and the amount of potassium fluoride should be increased to 18 mass fractions. After processing, this solution turns slightly frosted glass. Rougher matte finish can be achieved with the composition 2: ammonium fluoride - 100 parts, sulfuric acid - 20 parts ammonium sulphate - 100 parts, water - 100 parts. (Applying acidic ammonium fluoride not take 100 parts, and 50-60).
Approximate time of etching 20 - 40 minutes, then washed thoroughly etched areas. Paraffin wax is removed after use, warming it. When working with chemicals, always follow safety rules: acid poured in a thin stream of water, stirring the solution with a glass rod or tube, eye protect goggles, rubber gloves and hands. All work is carried out in a well-ventilated area.

Mixture and etching pastes, matting and patterning
1. Composition № 1
0.8 kg - NH4HF2 (BPA)
0.08 kg - NH4F (FA)
0.12 kg - barium sulphate (BaSO4)
Mix three salt.
0.4 l - hydrochloric acid (35% HCl) salt solution in acid and let stand for 10-15 hours
You can add concentrated H2SO4
Before etching glass grease.

2. Composition № 2
BFA (NH4HF2) - 160 g
BaSO4 - 200 ÷ 220 g
Water (H2O) - 200 ml

3. Matting paste № 1
BFA (NH4HF2) - 100 g
BaSO4 - 50 g
Water (H2O) - 120 ml

4. Matting paste № 2
BFA (NH4HF2) - 75 g
BaSO4 - 75 g
Water (H2O) - 100 ml

Note: BFA - ammonium bifluoride

Attention! The speed and quality of processing of the glass depends on the glass composition and temperature of the working fluid. The optimal treatment regimen and composition of the mixture is achieved matting empirically.
